But not because of calls by environmentalists unhappy with the royal couple’s planned visits to some companies accused of pollution and labour trouble.
Crown Princess Mette-Marit dropped plans to fly to Santiago via Paris on Tuesday. She and her husband, Crown Prince Haakon, are due to start a three-day official trip to Chile on Wednesday.
On Tuesday morning, however, Mette-Marit woke up feeling unwell. Palace officials say she has an acute case of stomach flu (called omgangssyke in Norwegian.)
“The doctor has recommended that the crown princess not travel to Chile as planned today,” palace spokeswoman Astrid Versto told Aftenposten.no. “It’s too early to say whether she can travel tomorrow.”
The crown couple hosted a birthday party on Tuesday for their four-year-old daughter Ingrid Alexandra. Aftenposten.no is told that several of the children at the kindergarten Princess Ingrid Alexandra attends have also been ill lately, along with palace staff.
The trip to Chile has been planned for more than a year, and marks the first time a member of the royal family has made an official visit to the country since the late King Olav visited in 1967.
Crown Prince Haakon has so far managed to avoid being bitten by the tummy bug, and was traveling as planned Tuesday afternoon.
